A Bit About Me

Susan Colby is a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) with just under 20 years of experience in the mental health field at various levels in the profession. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Saint Leo University in 2003 and a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology - Counseling Specialty - from Walden University in 2018. She has also held certification as a master's level addictions professional (MCAP) since 2018.


Before entering the mental health field, Susan worked in management, administration, customer service, radio broadcasting, and the United States Postal Service, and served in the United States Navy in the late 1980s - early 1990s.


Susan has experience working with(children, adolescents, and adults in various psychiatric hospitals in Tampa, Florida, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. She has worked in multiple community services agencies providing intensive community-based treatment to families with children having mental health conditions and behavioral issues.


Additionally, Susan has worked with correctional inmates diagnosed with substance use and other mental health conditions and provided clinical services to diverse adult clientele in a partial hospitalization program that focused on mental health and substance use disorders.


Susan has collaborated with individuals having a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, adjustment, anger, substance use, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, grief, and ADHD. She has also helped those with histories of trauma or emotional abuse.


Susan's treatment approach includes trauma-informed empathic listening while utilizing integrative methods of supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology, solution-focused therapy, existential therapy, and Gestalt techniques. She enjoys crafting the therapeutic experience to meet your unique and specific needs. She believes in treating clients with respect, sensitivity, and compassion.
